SOLDIER’S SOUL

This one’s from my granddad’s diary … I felt that if the war is good about something, it’s about this…

July 23, 1944

The war is getting worse everyday; I can’t seem to find me a friend. I met Dalk and Skritchy yesterday, they were good guys and before I could know them more, they were killed by artillery fire this morning. It tells me that everyone in this war could die as soon as fate tells them to.

But some sight of relief that I witness this afternoon was morale boosting. When the Krauts were coming in on our position, our commander called in the RAF aircraft. A few minutes later, two planes that I found out later as P47 Thunderbolts came tumbling two bombs on the German. The explosion knocked out a Panzer tank and the Germans retreated.

By an act of god, I survive another dreadful day with the lost of my two new friends. May God have mercy on a soldier’s soul. Amen
