GREEN FIELDS OF SUMMER
Chorus:
Green fields of summer,
Golden leaves of fall,
Gray skies of winter
With snow on the wall.
Bitter winds blow through the black willow stems
Till the whispering of leaves
Sings of springtime again.
~ 1 ~
As a child you would run
Through the fields of green.
Climb high in the trees
And fly kites in the breeze.
And dance on the wind
‘Til the sun settled low
And then sleep out at night
‘Til the first morning glow.
Chorus:
~ 2 ~
You would hike through the mountains
And drink from its streams.
And catch a stray moonbeam
That streaked through your dreams.
And watch the sun set
And then watch the moon rise.
And then fall fast asleep
Under star studded skies.
Chorus:
~ 3 ~
And now you are older
And stand on the side.
And watch your young child
Run free and run wild.
And know in your heart
That this child you have seen
Will be free to run wild
Through the fields of green.
~ 4 ~
Green fields of summer,
Golden leaves of fall.
These are your memories
So cherish them all.
But keep them alive
As you share them with friends.
Then your memories live on
Again and again
And again and again
And again and again.

Author’s Note: My close friend and fellow Postal Person accompanied me on guitar. Things were actually working out well on my first attempt at not making a fool of myself, until the third verse.
Picture if you will that he continues to play without missing a note as I stand there speechless and ask “Hey Jack, what’s the third verse?” he starts to sing quietly “you would hike through”. “No Jack. That was the second. What’s the third? Oh I remember. Sorry about that folks.”
On any given day I could have run out of the room crying and made a complete ass of myself. But I finished the song as the audience was still laughing. Had I not been a member of a local poetry group for a few years, I’m sure the situation could have been far worse. After that I did “Lynn, you are my angel” song without his guitar.
