ASHES IN THE WIND

We know the horrors of Auschwitz
Dachau and Buchenwald,
And feel collective fear
Each time we hear their name.
And hear the cries of prisoners
As they cried out in pain.
So many of them died,
So many wish they had.
The prisoners lost what they held dear;
Fathers lost their wives,
Mothers lost their sons,
And a nation lost a people
Through the death of chosen ones.
If there are lessons to be learned
Of why a nation sinned,
They’re answered by the prisoners
Through ashes in the wind.

This poem inspired the response, “Ashes in the Wind
