Sheila Williams ~ Singing Cloud
THE LOVE OF OUR ELDERS!
Oh, to be again a little one
and have the comfort of grandmother’s arms,
the lap that I could crawl into
and be safe from the all the world.
To hear the stories of the long ago
when being brown was not a crime,
when saying prayers was a sacred thing –
something to guide our days.
How I long in troubled times
for her peaceful calming words,
when I would come home crying
from the teasing and the hurt.
Grandmother always knew what to do
and what to say to take the pain away,
why can they not accept me as I am,
to her I would say?
Dohiyi was her word to me,
feel it deep inside,
remember all the beauty in our lives
gifts from Creator and our Mother Earth.
See the little dandelion – so insignificant he seems,
and yet he offers so many things and so many uses
to those who take the time to learn about him.
How many people do you know
who try to kill the dandelion out,
how many think he is a weed the world does not need?
In this way she helped me to see
I too have a reason to be,
Creator gave life to all things,
who are we to decide who should be
and who should not?
And one day all will see
they should have taken the time
to learn and understand what we have to offer,
there is so much good and wisdom in our Elders,
so much comfort for this country!
