BEST O’ THE SEASON
(Violence beyond Reason)

At Christmas I brought in my harmonica
With the prisoners I would sing
The Christmas carols of my youth
And other Christmassy things

Jingle Bells midst puke barf smells
Quieted screams from out of the cells
The prisoners stopped their cell mate fights
As they began the singing of silent night!

Domestic violence from the drinking of beers
Caused family assaults and spousal fears
These beatings that caused the helter-skelter
Sending wives and kids to the woman’s shelter!

Author’s Note: Merry Christmas Thoughts from the cells 1979 – 2002. When I was a jail guard, one of my shift partners brought violent assault PO gentleman into our cells. The perp kept kicking and punching and as one of my guys tried to cuff him the other cop who was being kicked, flailed at the perp with his night stick but kept hitting the other cop on the arms. After I sat on the perp and got all the air out of him, removed his belt and boots and quieted him down, I had to write a “report on injury” – cop injured in battle by friendly “night stick” (fire). Hey it’s a strange world working with prisoners on PCPs and booze and boy, are they physically strong!
