RIFLE FAMILY MEMORIES
The photograph of the General, picture taker(s) and the Colonel
Will give John Leighton inspiration to write in his daily Journal
The Crown and the good conduct stripes covered the lower sleeves
These are the memories in my mind as the Rifle Family grieves!
John Leighton is a photographer who can see the errors in mine
My picture taking expertise has not improved with time
I took Brucer’s pictures, way off centre, down on bended knee
Did the Brigade and Battalion photographer(s) take pictures too of me?
Years have passed, memories dim – I hear the Rifle’s Drums
Every one must get it right – or suffer the Rod’s tantrums
I was a young Section Commander with the bugle and the deuce
When we marched out there upon the square to the bandsmen led by Bruce!
When the Rat was duty bugler he played a mean last post!
Of all who played the bugle call his notes were smoother than most!
We had the best band in Deutschland, all the experts did deduce
And mainly that was just because, we had Bugle Major Roy Bruce!
Rat and the Brucer are back on the square
Both were greeted by the Rod up there!
Mickey O’Brien and departed Rifle Brothers
Will soon be joined by me, and the others!
RIP Lads – Billy
