THE “SEARCHING” TRILOGY
PICKET FENCE
I have known the days of excess
And those times of ‘not enough’
I have seen the golden sunrise
And faced nights that were so rough
The fire inside grows weaker
And the light grows dimmer still
But that is not a bad thing
For of life I’ve had my fill
Now I see a picket fence that
Stretches straight across my way
It marks a destination
Called the ending of my day
So when I reach that final place
Remember this of me
I sang the song of those I knew
Who fought for liberty

DOING TIME
Sitting in my room tonight
Thinking of hard times
Gazing back at distant years
And counting up the crimes
I haven’t been a shining light
Or so it seems to me
I’ve written far too long of this world
And it’s disagree
I finally found a road that said
No longer need I roam
For all I’ve ever tried to do
Was find my way back home
Perhaps I’ll get there someday
At least I made a start
But I don’t think my friend
There is enough left of my heart

THE STORM
Got shattered long ago but then
That’s how it was for me
I found most of the pieces
But I could not find the key
So many years of try
But I’ve gone on in spite of it
Yet still no matter what I do,
Some pieces will not fit
Don’t really know just what to do
With this imperfect form
I know I’m not the only one
To ever face the storm
I cannot tell you just how weary
I have come to be
The sea remains so angry
And the storm still comes for me
