GOD SPEED, SUSANNAH
God speed, Susannah, you’re in the buggy and gone
Drive swiftly to Savannah, take a message to Long
Tell him the Carolina sky is red to the north
Charleston is burning and Yankees are in the port
God speed, Susannah, your mission is clear
Drive swiftly to Savannah; Yankees are near
Tell Uncle Ridge to gather the family and flee
Shearman is marching from the north to the sea
God speed, Susannah, you’re a brave little lass
Drive swiftly to Savannah, take rest in the grass
Tell Colonel Long to escape to the west
Shearman is marching he’ll put Long to the test
God speed, Susannah, drive through the night
Drive swiftly to Savannah before the first light
The sky is red and falling, cannons thunder all day
Drive swiftly to Savannah, your horse knows the way
