POPCORN SUTTON
Popcorn has flown away
Not to jail
But to the other side
Of the vale
Legendary moonshiner
Choose death as being kinder
Than living behind a prison bar
Play a little Bluegrass…
Say a little prayer as you pass the jar…

Author’s Note: Popcorn Sutton had become a legend in the Tennessee Mountains

Popcorn Sutton’s antique shop (Maggie Valley, North Carolina) provides a peek into the way life used to be in the Smoky Mountains. Among the items Sutton has for sale are old horse collars and handcrafted moonshine stills. In his book Me and My Likker, Sutton re-counts his youthful moonshining days, and shows how to build a still and make “ruckus juice” from corn and rye.
