THE CLOSET…
WWII… A Self-Education

Awarded: September 24, 2006The Holocaust…
in black and white
… for a child reading alone
in a closet…
oh… what a sight…
Light filtering
from the tiny slanted
window above
The child was not reading
words of love
Old newspapers…
stacked and saved
… stored here
in this treasure cave
Stories of horrors and war
… words burned
into a young heart
… forevermore
Smoke used to reach
to the sky
from the crematoriums
where the bodies
were piled high
Yellowed newspapers
… brittle with age
Eagerly young hands
turned each page
Stark pictures
in black and white…
destruction caused
by a madman’s might
I still am not
able to understand
the horror
of man’s inhumanity to man
