FEAR

IWVPA Double Tap Award for War Poetry: June 25, 2005

The jungle is ominous… and quiet
but I am all right…
as long as I can see the light
It’s shinning there
… just out of reach
I am scared and sweating
and I don’t mean to preach
but fear meets its own self
with scenes that reach
into the inner mind
with horrors of every kind
and screams…
when it sees its own face…
which it shows nightly in my dreams
but I am all right
just as long
as I can see the light
It’s shinning there…
atop my bedside stand
and only when I awake
and see it
do I know I’m not
still in a foreign land
Pray it is not a beacon
… shinning through time
lighting a path to be followed
… by the demons in my mind…
