1,000 YARD STARE
They have “that” look –
the eyes are dark and ringed with red –
pain-filled, tired eyes,
empty, angry eyes, almost dead…
eyes that are full of the horror that they’ve seen,
I wonder what they saw in jungles green;
what changed their souls forevermore
though they are now on friendly shore –
What did they see to change them so?
I need to know.
If you think you need to live in silence
carrying the burden
of things long gone –
I can’t change anything
but I can say hold on to me
when the nights are long –
Sometimes I think you
can’t see the forest for the tree –
you can see 1,000 yards
but still, you can’t see me.
