MY WAR
I never said I was a hero
Nor a coward I dare to say
But if I really think about it
I’ve been both in my own way
Rockets in, mortars out
Snipers in the night
Flares poppin’, guns crackin’
Guard duty kept me tight
Hours passed in sweaty darkness
Staring to the night
M-16 locked and loaded
Ready for the fight
No I’m not a hero
But I lived under the gun
I served my time on the line
My war, I guess is won
I look back at what I did
And what I didn’t do
But it really doesn’t matter much
Because now the war is through
And now I can understand
That surge inside my heart
The jolting fear reaction
When threats begin to start
They say it never goes away
But I’m ready for it now
I get my mind in a place
That keeps my peace somehow
No I’m not a hero
But I lived under the gun
I served my time on the line
My war, I guess is won
