ENEMY FRIEND
I kneel here before you,
Your eyes filled with sorrow.
You can wound me, or kill me,
Or let me live till tomorrow.
Our lands are at war,
Yet we’ve never met.
And nothing you’ve done
Has made me upset.
I see that you’re tired.
I’m bone weary too.
And I’m numb from the fear
That cuts us in two.
I offer my hand
And hope you’ll take mine.
I stand up to face you
And straighten my spine.
I tell you my story
Knowing you can’t understand.
I mean no harm or malice
To your people or land.
My brother, my keeper,
My savior, my friend.
Please spare and protect me
Don’t let my life end.
I knew every smell,
I knew every sound.
I just didn’t know
This was enemy ground.
I can see that you’re thinking
About what to do.
My fate’s in your hands,
And I must trust you.
Your eyes held your message,
Your decision about me.
It was an act of pure courage
When you set me free.
