SADNESS
Inside of me a sadness lives
It’s been there since the war
When I began to realize
What we weren’t fighting for
It’s been there many years
And still it lingers hauntingly
How could we walk away from those
We promised to keep free?
It was a bitter pill to swallow
And the darkest truth
Indeed it was a marker
For the ending of my youth
It cannot take the smile that comes
When I greet every dawn
But I must tell you friend
I’d love to wake and find it gone
