AND SO IT GOES

It’s always in the eyes that gaze
A marker from too many days
So distant, vacant; far away
You can’t mistake that look they say

It’s in the eyes the story’s told
And in the soul where blood runs cold
Yes it’s the eyes that always tell
Of too much time spent living hell

You stand the line you take the blow
And not a tear can ever show
You are the rock you cannot flee
Your punishment is that you see

And as the searing scar is made
Forevermore the shadows fade
It was a time of painful light
That gave us all too much of sight

I sing a song of man’s lament
For all the sacrifices spent
And ask the choir recall a hymn
For those whose sight is still so grim

And so the endless struggle goes
Forever now, the harshest blows
As canyons echo to the sound
That terror makes when death is found

And though the conflicts will not cease
Seems there’s no profit found in peace
Too many never recognize
The truth that burns inside their eyes
