CARDBOARD COTTAGES

Would that I could turn the cardboard to stone
Fill it with warmth he could have as his own
Stock up the pantry with things sweet and good
These things I would do, if only I could

I'd buy him this season a big Christmas tree
With a star on the top and gifts underneath
I'd hang mistletoe, find him a little Miss
So he'd see it there and have someone to kiss

I'd fill up a stocking for him Christmas Eve
See to it he had no reason to grieve
For his fireplace I'd go and chop him some wood
If it would do any good, I'd do what I could

The things he needs most though, alas, we can't give
We can't erase memories or bestow will to live
If we could cut off a nightmare by flipping a switch
There would be no cardboard cottages, they'd be happy and rich

Guess the one thing I can do this season is try
To seek out one of these unfortunate guys
Might share a meal or a story inside my warm home
'Cause even a loner should not be alone

God bless em!
