A MOTHER’S JOB IS NEVER DONE

I watched as my daughter gets ready for school,
In this, her very first year.
Determined to smile, though crying inside,
I hold back a scared Mother’s tears.
Chattering away in her sweet little voice,
Of nothing and everything to her,
I listened intently, knowing too well,
“Letting go” is a blessing and a curse.
With shiny new shoes and bows in her hair,
My daughter approaches the door,
One last look back and a deep, furtive smile;
She enters the ‘grown up’ world.
I paused to reflect on the day she was born,
And every moment we’ve shared,
How can she know she captured my heart,
From that very first breath of air?
Five years have passed, in the blink of an eye,
My daughter lets go of my hand,
If wishes came true and dreams never die,
I’d live them all over again.
“Lord, help me to know that I’ve given my best,
And will ‘till the day that I die.
Give me the strength to let my child go,
And know when to hold her so tight.
You know I need patience for a Mother learns too,
I’m growing with her every day.
Teach us to live each moment You give,
Guide us, Jesus, I pray.”
Driving back home, I find myself singing
Songs I taught her when young,
A smile dries the tears for now I realize,
A Mother’s ‘job’ is never done.
