DARKEST HOURS

War does not vanish with the cover of darkness
unpreventable situations linger and stay
just maybe it's God's way of closing the blinds
on horrors occurred in the bright of day

Soldiers in battle shielded by blackness
reflecting images of family and friends
praying that darkness comes often
each night, one closer to war's end

In rain filled trenches, cold and shivering
the dark of darkness gives way to light
groans and moans from battered warriors
knowing again this day they'll fight

When nightfall returns
their numbers are less
as some of their buddies
will be at final rest

Toughened by war
holding back tears
the bravest of the brave
live each day in fear
