TO UNDERSTAND THE MATTER
The artist’s brush to canvas,
The poet’s pen to page,
What does it really matter,
The medium engaged?
A picture’s thousand words,
Or a poem depicting scenes,
What does it really matter?
What does it really mean?
The tiny bird in flight
Sees not the artist’s hand
Nor does it seem to matter
What he can’t understand.
Creating on the canvas
Or on the printed page,
It really seems to matter
And so we must engage.
The tiny boy at play
Will imitate his dad.
‘Tis strange it seems to matter,
Since he is just a tad.
The artist child within you,
In learning how to play
And to imitate the Master,
Must first move out the way…
To form the true alliance
With the Great Creator.
Refusal is self-will and
Counter to your nature.
Trigger synchronicity
And get rid of all the fears.
All that matters is to leap
Before the net appears.
Then you must create by faith
And soon you’ll understand
You are just a channel from
The true Creator’s hand.

Author’s Note: I will share with you the contents of a letter which I included with the poem I composed for her: By the way, her first name is the same as mine. I thought that was kinda cool.
From: One Budding Artist to Another
Dear Nancy,
I hope this poem will provide encouragement for you to continue in the desires of your heart. Please do yourself a favor and obtain a copy of the book entitled, “The Artist’s Way” (A spiritual path to higher creativity) by Julia Cameron. I’m sure it will be an immense help in your battle with your sense of identity and help you realize that you are not alone on this road on which you travel.
A lot of times, all we need are those little voices from different directions to convince us to take the plunge into the artist’s well. We are more than one voice and our voices are calling to you to come on in, the water’s fine!
Wishing you much success, I am Nancy L. Meek
The book which I had recommended she read was given to me by a co-worker, who is also a fellow artist. I was getting writer’s block rather often and the book helped tremendously in understanding many of the ways our inspiration can become “blocked” and offered ways and helpful hints to deal with and overcome that frustrating period.
Children are gifts from God and I find it awesome that some still become beautiful people in spite of their parents. I am so happy that you are among the beautiful.
Love, Nancy
