MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In my comings and goings, while shopping one day,
I got in my car to leave;
but wouldn’t you know it, it just wouldn’t start,
but I told myself, “Believe!”

“Guardian Angels, where are you?”
Click-a-click-a-click.
Cranking would be a miracle
and getting home, a trick.

Then, lo and behold, two men came…
one right after the other.
I noticed one was black… the other white
as they introduced each other.

Accessing my problem, they cleaned my posts
and the car cranked right away.
“Thank you, both, so very much!”
was all that I could say.

One man’s name was “Cummings”
and the other, “Goings”… mmmmm?
We laughed about the difference
on that sunny day ‘round noon.

I offered cash to both of them,
but they shook their heads at me.
Knowing I was on my way
was indeed their only fee.

Many years have passed since then
and maybe they’re reading this now.
Were “Johnny” and “Bill” your first names?
“Oh, Memory, serve me somehow!”

There were differences in you, yes,
but commonality, more so.
You were helpful, kind, friendly, courteous
and sharing a common goal,

so one young woman could have a brighter day,
glowing from deeds of two thoughtful men.
Again, I want to thank you,
no matter if you are a “Cummings” or a “Goings”
