BEFORE THE FACT

Oh, if I could have stopped him
Before the fact
Before that day we found her dead
Before he stared into her eyes
Then shot her in the head

Oh, if I could have stopped him
While he was raping me
Perhaps she’d be alive today
A wife and mom of three

Oh, if I could have stopped him
Before the fact
His cell would now be bare
And he’d be rotting in the ground
And she’d be unaware

Oh, if I could have stopped him
They never would have met
Her kids would have their mom
And my cheeks would not be wet

Oh, if I could have stopped him
Before the fact
I’d not feel guilty now
Blaming myself each day
For that bullet in her brow

Oh, if I could have stopped him
What would my thoughts have been
I suppose I’d still be wondering
Why he did not kill me then
