DEATH OF CAPTAIN REX WHISTLER
(2nd Welsh Guards and an Artist)

Captain Rex Whistler
Rex Whistler was a well-known and talented artist, who served in the Welsh Guards Armoured Division in Normandy
I gazed at the beautiful murals at Plas Newydd,
Remembering the artist, the man that created
Those beautiful, vivid bright scenes.
And then I recalled another such place
Equally vivid, in a much darker setting.

The small fields of the Bocage Country,
It’s thick hedgerows concealing heavy guns,
Tanks on fire, their crews often burning,
Soldiers rushing, dodging and falling.

Then the sight of this talented man,
A captain lying dead on the ground!
Those creative hands now lifeless and still
Never again, never again to hold a brush.
