DOING THE RIGHT THING
I haven't written a poem in quite awhile.
I've had many things happen that made me smile.
Right now I'm listening to the radio
about how some lives will go
toward something else
to something other than self.
A cause, a philosophy, an art,
a way of life
that's so very smart.
An incident that opens blind eyes to see
the pain in others eyes;
the horror when a child dies:
The flight of hope
that would cause
this bad attitude.
But you can't get to there
from here, dude.
You can't change the world you dope
You take the drug right off the shelf
and foil reality
and change thyself.
Scant solace there
without being too judgmental and solemn
you've only compounded the problem.
The sun is shinning
and the birds are singing
if you have ears to hear
and eyes for seeing.
Climb out of that dark hole of depression
and give the gift that is this life,
it's true expression.
Be a good friend, brother,
sister, father or mother.
Be that decent human being
who gives the love
that comes from within
and that will make
your soul sing.
It ain't much
its called
doing the right thing.
