CAUGHT BETWEEN A SMILE AND THE HARD PLACE

Caught between a smile
and a frown.
What should have been up
is suddenly down.
The mouth tells plausible lies
but our bodies and faces
will give it away.

Comments unheard
because we all read the face
for the clues on how we should feel
regardless of religion, position or race.
We all know the face of fear
we all know panic
be it out in the street
or on the Titanic.
We all know joy
we all like to laugh
at least
so says this clueless boy.

Muse where have you gone?
You've left me hanging
half way through the song.
You left me sitting
in a crowded coffee shop
still scribbling words
unable to stop.
Babbling on, babbling on,
as if I didn't know the steps
or the melody to the song.

Pausing, hung out to dry,
twisting in the wind awhile
trying to pick up the tune
waving my pen
and scratching my face
caught between a smile
and the hard place.
