ALONE, BUT WHY?

Could fear be the reason
or could it be the season?
We hesitate on the edge of spring
when young men and old men too
watch for the ladies to shake that thing.

Unless, of course, you are on that unfortunate shore
from which there is no return
and I don't mean the ashes in a funeral urn.
The self imposed sentence to be one to one
with no relationships to be run.

Of course in your mind of minds
this is the lonely hilltop you have climbed.
To be the first everyday to see the sun
on this mountaintop
there is only room for one.

You could make room or come down a notch
but choose not to be captured by your crotch.
It is the endless contest for power
the this and that
for the privilege of the begat.

I could be convinced to be a pair
but the tyranny I would demand
would be unfair
and no woman in her right mind
would meet me there.

So this spring
with no malice aforethought
I'll smell the flowers
and listen to the birds sing
and alone watch the ladies shake that thing.
