it was just
a rumour
of destiny

like all those headstones
in ancient graveyards
the chipped and worn death masks
and all those yellowing photographs

in puzzling albums
found in the attics
of our fathers
and our moms

then there were many
and now we are down to one at most
the obverse of love is loss
that is the only signpost
