FOUR GUN COFFEE BREAK

Getting out from the rain,
coffee on the table
journal in future
two guns inside
two guns outside.
A van over turns
and catches fire
a block away
and the usual sirens reply.
My iPod lights up
but refuses to play.
All I have is the ringing in my ears,
as old friend Ian
laughs at my outrageous comments
on the politics of the day.
Brinks guards up against the wall
waiting in quick draw fashion
for the time lock to work.
Turns out, Ian and I, are voting the same way
but for very different reasons.
The rain is coming down so hard
its bouncing
and although the top of me
is umbrella dry
I’m soaked up to my knees.
And the day creeps inexorably
from middle grey to black
as I sit in front of the screen
after my
four gun coffee break.
