she’s doing the herky jerky
while trying to kick cold turkey
with no way to imagine a future
and no way to get any nurture

call the doctor JJ say
but only the dealer can change the day
got no money then its no play
and there is nothing to save your day

clapping hands in time for the song
don’t go to strangers it won’t be long
while the guitar leads us down the path
just past the grapes of wrath

back in my old drunken days
chasing the buzz
it was amazing
what a couple of cold beer does

been there done that
kicked a dog and skinned a cat
and found myself
listening to a talking rat

old paper bag winos
with bulbous red nose
straining shoe polish
through old panty hose

horse addicts turning blue
and the crowd doesn’t know what to do
and the sirens wail him off to emergency
to have some OD drug surgery

but the day is grey down here in the swamp
and the sky drips cold and damp
and the concrete pillow on offer
and the wet sleeping bag doesn’t get any softer

but the girl still does her crack dance
like she was in some kind of trance
and she would love to sober up
if she only had the chance

but for all these operations
the water runs deep and is cold as ice
so it is for this
crack dance and other observations
