I don’t know why this is on my mind this morning, but memory has intruded and I’m struggling to remember exact date when we “Trouped the Colours” in Germany in 1956 with the 1PPCLI[•]. The founder of the regiment, Hamilton Gault took the salute. I went out to a photographer in the little town of Hemer once I had changed out of my parade uniform, our battledress and white belts, and got togged out in the regimental blues dress uniform with my maroon beret. There was not much colour photography in those days so the photographer shot in black and white and hand coloured the resulting print.
It’s hard for me to look at that picture and contrast it with the hard mileage face I see in the mirror this morning.
