SOUTHERNER
He died today at 89
A southern man
Who rode many miles down a dirt road
To say farewell to me,
Back in 65
Long ago… And tipped his hat to me
Said boys like me were gettin’ scarce
And the south was gettin’ thin
On bravery and…
…… Then
Came a tear in his eye
… And his hand trembled
As he said,
“all the war we had is gone now
…… All the south is gone to history.
I wish you could just stay… Boy!
Just stay! Stay home… Boy!”
… And I watched as he left me
That day.
All stars and bars and southern…… He!
A southern man
Who died today at 89
Godspeed
My old friend!
