LIFE IS A TEACHER
As I sit in this steel chair,
I look back through time's cloudy air
I see times troubled, desperate, and sad
mingled with times joyous, happy, and glad
Everything I look back on has taught something
filling little parts of myself and my being
Each incident has taught some dark and some light
They can be looked at as wrong and right.
A few individuals stand apart
Having shaped my mind and heart
Having locked themselves in my memory
Helping to make me what I be.
A second grade teacher in California
Who recognized the signs of dyslexia
Made it possible for what I write
to be legible in your sight.
An elderly man in Colorado
who took the time to show
His beliefs, morals, and sheen
to a young, energetic, teen.
Sitting here in middle age
Using my time on this stage
To give my personal thank you
to teachers who life help us through.
