THE MORE YOU GIVE

The more you give the more they will take,
And they will eat the whole lot of your cake,
That in decline you will call for their aid,
And discover just how rapid friendships fade.
There is more value in things rarer done,
For all too much of anything like sun,
That burns the back that gives away its shirt,
Is by its generous pleasure often hurt.
Call up thy strength and better serve thy friend,
By giving seldom and more seldom lend,
For those who learn to cope without such care,
Will be the first to calm you in despair…
For if you offer love, love is returned,
But to give it all away you will be spurned
