THE FISHERMAN

My harsh enquiry has oft provoked response,
Engraved in deeper sentiments than the cause,
That all my probes were measured only once,
Thereby being met without a fond applause.
‘Tis that first cast that causes those that follow
To make a splash far greater than is true;
For though the lure is hueless and quite hollow,
Tis that same lure I with my first cast threw.
Captains are thus sacked and better actors,
Are swapped for those conforming to the rules,
Or those who drive a Cadillac not a tractor,
Or toe the line though they may all be fools.
‘Tis that first sight of you that really matters,
Lest the image you convey just simply shatters.
