REASONS
Do you forgive to reap your own reward
That you by God are seen to be so true?
Or is it for the person with the sword
Who, in his vile depression, threatened you?
Is your mercy really based on why
The other did the deed that you deplore;
Or is it for the favours when you die
That heaven will bring you things that you adore?
What is sincere in forgiveness for such end
If by it, all you seek is heaven’s reward,
That by your act, you seek to transcend
By yourself without your claimed accord?
So oft we think that what we do is right
That viewed by day is different in the night.
