PASSING TIME
Are we not all the victims of cruel time
which winds life’s clock with eagerness to pass?
That by its motion all our lives decline,
like idle cattle chewing down the grass.
It matters not how quickly we may walk
nor yet how slowly we might turn and bend;
it matters not what we might say in talk
we are by time delivered to our end.
Still, knowing our fate, we seek from life to gain,
while we live in a brotherhood of love
that in due course might lessen tyrant pain,
where in our memories time devours the Dove.
Yet all those things we fought for to provide
will be for us, by passing time denied.
