MARY
(For Mary E. Rogers)
You know, too kind is Mary, my dear friend,
Who speaks her mind and never will pretend,
So sensitive, because she has strong views,
Yet only herself does she ever accuse
All that is loyal, good, and so sincere,
Defines her character that she herself doth fear,
Withdrawing from her commitment with a sense of guilt,
As though her words might make another wilt.
But yet she stands among us strong and true,
Disheartened because she thinks she offends the few,
Who simply respond as their own minds prescribe,
Just adding to the lines of diatribe,
For Mary, Mary you know not how much you mean,
To all those folk who keep alive the dream.
