FOR YOU, NANCY…
Would you have me cower in the lie of silence?
That I make not my feelings known?
There is no delight in my observance,
and much less in my harsh tone.
I correct not they who scorn my truth,
nor do I chide uncivil men,
for harm comes from those uncouth,
and shame would ink my pen.
Yet I would, the wise ones scorn,
and tear their noble cloth,
for they would love me all the more,
that I’d no longer scoff;
For they would note my true concern,
and forgive me for my wrath.
