HAWK AND DOVE

Will the bird fly out if the cage is opened,
When it is safe to defy the jailer’s threat,
How strong would be those unused wings,
How far would that sweet bird’s flight get.
Some fly from cage to cage oft briefly free,
But their wings are not strong enough to fly,
Beyond the shelter to where they want to be,
That at each cage a new jailer they defy.
Who would not possess you if he felt he could,
Yet better is the trust that comes with love,
Though what is happy must I think be good,
For master hawk can always out fly the dove.
No gilded cage ever kept a Dove restrained
That loved not the hawk that kept her so contained
