I was a soldier in a distant war;
I served my country and my friends: that’s all.
It is part of history and part of my life,
as is my marriage to my darling wife.
Yet unlike love, sadness I reject,
thus of its vanity I do so object
for there is no purpose that it be retained,
that its morbid culture not be maintained.
Tis my pursuit to discard painful thought,
for one receives those things that are sought,
with simple truth that wallows in pure glee,
if he indeed seeks truly to be free.
… And I do find it easier by far to smile,
when my mind does not bad thoughts compile
