VOICE OF THE VET: VETERANS WRITING PROJECT

Veterans, Soldiers, Warriors and Service Men and Women are invited to participate in Free Weekly Writing Workshops with Kathleen Nesbitt, a published writer and transformative language artist, at the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago.

Beginning Saturday, October 18th 2008
Thru Saturday, January 31st 2009
2:30pm – 5:00pm

With an emphasis on helping veterans process and cope with their experiences of war and the military through personal writing, these workshops will promote community building in a welcoming environment. Here the writers can give voice and bear witness to their common experiences as they work toward fostering personal peace, healing and renewal, and social reintegration. The workshops will explore the basics of the craft of writing, introduce the spiritually nourishing aspects of expressive writing, and provide tools to create a sustainable writing practice.

  • Veterans will have the opportunity to engage in workshops with published authors (TBA) once a month during the series.
  • Families of veterans will have the opportunity to participate in workshops once a month during the series: Nov. 15th, Dec. 20th, Jan. 17th.
  • Veterans will have the opportunity to be partnered with student artists from Columbia College’s Media Production class to create media works that tell/interpret the veteran’s stories and writing.
  • Veterans across the Nation can participate in the companion on-line writing program via VoiceoftheVet.org/blog
  • This fifteen-week series of workshops is intended as a pilot program to develop a model for interested veterans to be trained in and to utilize with peer veterans worldwide.
