WHAT IF?

The dreaded what-ifs returned today –
Oh how often have they gotten in the way?
They make me doubt all I dream and do,
and prevent me from seeing my projects through.

What if they laugh?
What if they tease?
What if the mock me?
What if,
What if,
What if…

Yet, I must attack the what-ifs dead on-
And direct those two words for my support.
For the what-ifs can be optimistic,
Just as easily as they can deflate your hopes.

What if they love it?
What if they rave?
What if I get published?
What if,
What if,
What if…

It is cliché to say,
Nothing ventured – nothing gained,
Yet, it is worth repeating,
For as sure as I am sitting here,
Tap-tapping these words,
I comprehend if you never dream –
No dreams will ever come true.
