Game Kathy and Me
Mother and Lex - not taken yesterday...
GAME KATHY
She was a '29er and she came from further out;
From further up in sheep country, the joint with endless drought.
Her father took to butcherin', no point in wastin' meat;
For dead is what they will be, with no water or feed – just heat.
The '30s came straight up, in death there is always life;
So the family wandered on the 'Wallaby', Mother, Father, kids and strife.
But drought was soon forgotten as 'war clouds' loomed around the bend;
And brothers ran to soar above them, the 'Empire' to defend.
1940 was a good one and the family wandered 'home';
They came back to the Gascoyne, never more to roam.
But history's a bastard, the war got bigger still;
Daddy took to wandering, though Katie she was ill.
Left behind at war's end, she met her favourite man;
She thought she'd start a family right here in "heroes" land.
But God, she can be awful; she wrecked havoc on children three,
Till every one had vanished and she was left with only me.
She was not hard, nor tough, nor wiry, but she had an ear to bend;
And everyone that knew her was proud to call her friend.
Her faith was never daunted even God, gave the game away;
For game little Kathy was going to the 'Homestead' on her resting day.
So the years rolled by, good on them, until it came to pass;
That game little Kathy was bound for greener grass.
Job done, she sat down quietly, St Peter didn't have a bother;
And her heading through the pearly gates was the last I saw of Mother.

Author’s Note:
Tony,
This one has been a struggle. Mother died in April 1997 and Father, an ex-'Z' man, died on St Patrick's Day the month before. As you will work out by the poem there is not much of the family left.
I have been meaning to write this for years but somehow the words wouldn't come out. You have pretty much spurred me to the effort. If you wouldn't mind adding this to the Bush Ballad section I would be grateful. All Mothers and special and mine was no different to anyone else's. She died of cancer after having been diagnosed for four days. With Father dead and me set she had nothing else to do but go 'Home'.
Regards
Fully
