THE CANDLE
I sat beside my father's bed
as he slowly slipped away
I asked him for his final wish
and this he had to say
"Keep the candle always lit
though the tallow may be low
keep the flame upon it
to give its' brightest glow
For somewhere in the darkness
someone will seek the light
and the brightness of your candle
may guide them through the night"
And so I lit the wick for him
and placed it by his side
and I knew as he sought heaven
he had used it as his guide
So a candle burns in memory
in a window by the bed
of a man whose last request
was for others to be led
