RESISTANCE

She'll give you pieces of herself
like a puzzle she sits quiet
you don't know if it's calm she feels
or the fury of a riot

parts of her are so unbending
other pieces out for mending
you will never know the ending
she will never tell

there lies a gulf wide between
what you think and what you've seen
you'll never know for sure
if she's in heaven or in hell

she'll close on you without a word
like the morning glory in the night
a flower at rest or something deeper
full of wonder or of fright

she holds it back away from you
you will never know
if her eyes when gazed upon
are the window to her soul

there are parts she'll show to you
other parts kept on a shelf
of her never ending battle
to gain knowledge of herself

she'll sit in quiet speculation
you'll speak and she may smile
or maybe keep eyes straight ahead
silent for a while

you maybe want to crack the shell
that holds the mystery inside
but refrain from this Pandora's box
not sure just what she hides

you'll spend some time away from her
you have to keep a distance
or frustration will be your reward
for her stony strong resistance

you will hold your puzzle pieces
loving every one
knowing you will never see
the whole puzzle finally done

there's a problem if you look
she is an unfinished book
some pages filled with mystery
some the ink you almost see

you'll have to fill the blank ones
from your own imagination
you will not leave her you cannot
your restrained by fascination

but you will never read the book
no matter your persistence
she'll always shy away from you
you'll never close the distance

so you take what little she will give
if that's the way you choose to live
and hope some day that she'll divine
a ready revelation
