David M. Drake

David M. Drake

David served with the 1/5th Mechanized Infantry, 25th Division, Cu Chi, from September 1967 through March 1968. He was wounded in the Fil Hol Rubber Plantation, in an area known as the Iron Triangle, on March 14th 1968 by enemy small arms fire and friendly mortar fire. There were 12 KIA’s in his platoon that day, and 10 of them were ‘new guys’… less than 3 weeks in-country. All but 2 were from ‘friendly’ mortar fire.

Both of David’s poems were started in hospital; 106th EVAC, Yokohama, Japan in April 1968 but not completed until 1990. He started a 3rd poem at the same time, but “got better” in 1990 and no longer felt the need to finish it. His poems are also included on the American Gourd Grower Magazine website.
