WHENEVER YOU HEAR ME SAY
Well here we are again my darling,
under this old Gidgee tree,
sitting on this cedar bench I made, a place we love to be
Courting Robins above, how they sing a lovely tune,
soft breezes blow through wild flowers, carrying their sweet perfume
Listening to the babbling creek, forever on its way,
Then you softly smile and nod whenever you hear me say……
Well here we are again my darling,
Our homesteads, cosy and warm,
though the front gate needs repair, rusted, tired and worn
Hear that distant crow, its harking mournful cry,
the long yard’s in need of water, brown, parched and dry
Often during droughts, we’d come down here to pray,
Then you softly smile and nod whenever you hear me say……
Well here we are again my darling,
Our Grandsons’, they’re planting winter seed,
Granddaughters’ are in the kitchen cooking up a feed
Your eyes still sparkle, like when we were young,
that day I proposed, told you, “you were my only one”
Feels so good, yes! This, our anniversary day
Then you softly smile and nod whenever you hear me say……
Well here we are again my darling;
Boys are back, now hungry for some stew,
kettles on the stove, ready for a brew
Mia calls “Nanna you really should come in”,
“Cooking’s all but finished, Micala’s started serving”
Blowing kisses, gently placing Wattle sprigs upon my grave
You softly smile, nod. Turn and slowly walk away.
