LAZY SUMMER DAYS AT THE DIAMOND R
Hot, sunny afternoons, after morning chores
Hitting the sack on the old metal swing
Semi flat with head propped up to lie
Swinging slowly, guided by one foot on floor
Ahh, how relaxing to just lay and do nothing
Cicadas playing endless, shrill sounds in trees
It’s like a harmonious chorus of highs and lows
Occasionally the creaking of the swing adds
Its tunes to the cicadas, along with the crow
Or a cow or cows mooing or hollering too
Sometimes, you can hear the horses neighing
Wondering what the animals are talking ‘bout
Other times it’s your sibling or cousin singing
Mostly, though, it’s just the cicadas and you
Laying on your side, facing the mountains
Feeling sweat beading down your face ‘n neck
Nary a breeze to blow through the cedars
All the while swinging slowly and dreaming
Of endless days of youth, not wanting to grow
Thinking ‘bout your grandparents and their life
Or of the ancestors that have come and gone
Gentle swinging, in the heat of the afternoon sun
Lulling you to a lazily kind of sleep and dream
Awakened suddenly from hearing of the buzzing
Of a wasp or yellow jacket looking for its prey
‘Hopefully, it is not I, to be stung!’ thinking aloud
Feeling sticky and stuck to the vinyl mattress
Repositioning myself to the other side’s view
What treasures, on this patio grand, with stone wall
Different rock collection, with beautiful quartz
Old red and white metal glider that is cool to touch
Picnic table where an evening meal is set upon
Hoping no snakes maybe lurking nearby to scare ‘n
Smelling old-fashioned roses and purple irises
All on a lazy, hot summer day at the Diamond R…
