MY FRIEND MILLIE

I once had a friend
Who was faithful to the end.
Her name was Millie,
An AKC brindle filly.

She loved to take a ride
In almost any countryside.
It was the ninth of June
That death came too soon!

As she rode the Winnebago
Death called her name to go,
To leave her master and her friend,
Before the journey’s end.

Muggs was her faithful friend,
Whom she groomed until the end.
She expired upon the RV’s floor
Never again to sleep and snore!

In Quitman County of Mississippi
She breathed her final breath.
What a void she leaves us all
As she obeyed the call of death!

Death shall call us face to face
From this planet’s strong embrace.
Downward goes the canine’s breath,
But upward gores the redeemed to rest!

God alone knows where good dogs go,
For He made then friends, not foe.
I shall miss MIlllie in my life,
And so shall Helen, my beloved wife.

So, farewell my fine canine friend,
You were faithful to the end:
And as I write, there falls a tear
In memory of you, no longer here!

Author’s Note: Millie died within a mile of where I spent my high school years
