LOOKING BACK

Veterans of World War Two
not knowing what to do,
often look back to years gone by
remembering those who had to die.

We can't understand why we lived
while other friends did not survive;
We think of those beneath the sea
and those who fell from the skies.

War takes its toll with the young
while mystifying the surviving old;
death never takes a holiday,
leaving the dead and living cold.

I looked back today and saw
what I didn't want to see;
the bones on men who died
in order to keep America Free.

PTSD keeps me looking back
to that time so long past,
when brave men fought a war
for Freedom, which shall last!
